The Seventh Seal Reaction

The Seventh Seal was an interesting film. First of all, I’m not a fan of the films using black and white when color is now available but I get that it was probably pretty expensive back then and given the budget of this film, it makes sense. For this film it definitely works given its darker tone and the atmosphere is pretty dreary given it is in the era of the black death. This movie was kinda cool and very philosophical. It was refreshing to get a movie set during the medieval period with the main character being a knight. I also like how the Knight is going against a personified version of death with a hood. This could be a stretch but this movie reminds me a lot of “Puss and Boots: The Last Wish” because it's also set during medieval times, puss is kind of a knight, the movie revolves around him being afraid of death, and going against a hooded wolf called “Death” trying to kill him. If I had to guess, this movie took a lot from The Seventh Seal. I think the chess game between the knight and death is a very iconic scene and metaphor for life that I feel I’ve seen in many other films before. Chess and life are similar because you have to have strategy, the outcome is uncertain, and every move determines your fate. One thing the film explores is how God remains silent when the world is suffering. That is something that I think about all the time, why do people deserve to suffer, good people for that matter? Like the knight, I live everyday trying to delay death, that is survival. I also question life and wish I could get answers. Overall, the movie was very deep but not something I’d want to watch again.

  1. I also enjoyed the films philosophical aspects and themes, especially the metaphor of playing chess with death as well as the overarching themes of Death and God.
