Stagecoach Reaction

Stagecoach was a refreshing movie to watch after only watching movies with no sound. I really appreciated being able to just listen and not have to concentrate hard on what the characters were doing in the scene. I also enjoyed seeing and hearing characters have whole conversations in the moment instead of having to read off the intertitles after the conversation already happened which I felt often ruined the momentum of the movies. Being able to hear the characters was nice because hearing the way they talked really helped display each character's personality. For example, Mr Peacock had a rather quiet soft voice that showed that he was  timid but also very polite. The character was rather ironic as peacocks are generally very confident, demanding animals which was the opposite for Mr Peacock who was very shy and passive. Hearing Buck’s voice was also nice because he had a raspy voice and an accent that added comedy to his character. Stepping into the western genre brought a bunch of beautiful scenery and crazy action scenes. I looked it up and apparently this film was shot in Monument Valley which became the setting for many iconic westerns to come after this film. The open landscape was pretty beautiful and the film defined the standard setting for westerns. The action was also very crazy, specifically during the chase scenes. Watching men fall off their horses full speed must have been super dangerous and hurt really bad. While I was watching the movie I wondered how they made the horses fall on demand after getting shot because it looked like it hurt the horses as well. The scene where the Indian drops beneath the horses and the stagecoach is one of the craziest stunts I’ve ever seen and I'm surprised that he got out of it scratch free and if it took multiple takes.

  1. Hi Ben! I also really appreciated that this film had sound. Your take on the meaning of the ways different characters speak is really interesting. I would agree that the voices added to the viewers' understanding of the characters' traits. Also, I was worried about the horses as well. It looked like there was a wire in front of them that just tipped the horses on command. The stunts were definitely wild to watch and probably crazier to film.

  2. Hi Ben! I also liked how the character's manner of speaking added to the plot. I also think it's interesting how you pointed out the irony of Peacock's name being loud and flamboyant with the character's timid manner of speaking. I was also shocked with the stunts in this film, especially when taking into consideration the time this film was made. Being trampled by a horse is not something I would want to do at a job, especially when there was no CGI and the stunts needed to be practical.
